June Shaputis Info and Picture Page
My name is June Shaputis, known to some of you as Agreeing Soup. I am married to Larry, for over 40 years now, who is a Correctional Officer. He had been in mining all our married life until 5 years ago when the mines all shut down here. We presently live in Ruth, NV, near Ely, NV, which is the most isolated town in the Continental USA. It is 200 miles one way to the nearest shopping mall or Wal-Mart for me. So we save up our shopping for when we head to our Buena Vista, Colorado house on our vacations. We have two sons, a wonderful daughter-in-law, and four grandchildren. My eldest son lives with Development Opportunities caregivers in Colorado and my youngest son lives with his family in the state of Washington and he serves in the Navy. We lost a third son as an infant from SIDS. My hobbies are website building, reading, researching local Nevada history, and my genealogy. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, low thyroid, and Sleep Apnea on December 21, 2001. I decided to do what I can to fight back and have started a serious weight loss program. I began on January 1, 2002. I am 5' 4" tall. My weight then was 303 lbs. On July 21, 2002 I weighed 263, a loss of 40 pounds. I am disabled due to severe disc degeneration and spondylolisthesis, where the last vertebra has slipped off the axis of the spine into my body over 1/2", causing the spinal cord to be injured. This causes me to be unable to walk for more than a few feet, I can not sit upright for more than a couple of hours and I fold over at the waist when trying to stand upright. The operation for this situation is only successful in 25% of people under the age of 40 years old. I assume this is due to bone density changes as one grows older. Since I am not a gambler and the doctors can not say whether or not the operation will help or make things worse and paralyze me, I will not seek the operation. The situation does not effect my mouth though. ;-) I am losing weight, slow but sure, at a rate of between 1 and 2 pounds a week, by learning to eat healthier and changing my life style. I now eat at regular times, eat much smaller portions, try hard not to miss meals, and make better choices in what I eat. My spinal disability limits the amount of exercise I am able to do. Posting on Healthy Planet helps me because of the super support and ideas from those people who also post there. But most of all it makes me be accountable and committed to my goals. Below are pictures of our dog, and both our Nevada and Colorado properties. We hope to be able to retire in a year or so and move back to Colorado.
